I can’t even count the amount of times I’ve seen Toots rock a stage from the first time that I saw him at reggae on the river over 30 years ago. I immediately became a fan of his energetic performance style running all over the stage even late in the 70s. Toots had one of the strongest voices I’ve ever seen as was made evident by the fact that he held the microphone about 3 feet away from his mouth and could still be heard clearly above the band in the audience. While I was recording the album All Rebel Rockers at Anchor Sound Studios in Kingston Jamaica, Toots was in the studio next-door recording and he would often pop his head in to listen to what I was doing and he told me he especially dug my song Say Hey I Love You. The last time I saw him was when he opened for my band two summers ago in Utah (which in itself was humbling thinking his band was opening). I watched his entire set from the side of the stage and he was as energetic as I’d ever seen him, so much so that It’s hard for me to imagine his passing today. Toots thanks for the music.
