Pt 2 of Dad eulogy... In recent years he’d be watching Law & Order and exclaim, “How could someone do that to another person?”

No fighting in the War Room.

The only Viet Nam story I could ever get out of him was of when he was in a helicopter and he spotted a wounded soldier lying alone on hill.  He ordered the pilot  down to pick up the man but enemy fire forced them to abort. The specter of a man he could not save haunted him and defined his idea of service as rescue.  He was a protector, never an attacker.  His beloved caretaker, ever-loving Emily, told us that she thinks he only lived as long as he did because he hadn’t finished his final mission: to rescue Mom.  In his last hours, he clung to life til my brothers and I could make it home.  We stayed with him for 6 hours, whispering to him not to worry, we would take care of Mom.  All his sons had their hands on his chest at the moment he decided to let go.  The breaths slowed down.  The pause between them longer and longer.  The breathing stopped. His heart kept beating for a full minute. The nurse said that was unusual.  His heart was stronger than the rest of him.

I never met a man of such deep convictions who was so able to see the big picture.  When the unholy combination of 9/11 and digital technology created a nation of frightened people who decided to watch only the news that they wanted to hear, Dad was a rare voice of reason. When I railed against his beloved George Bush, he said calmly, “Johnny, we live in America. If you don’t like the president, wait a few years. This is not a monarchy.”

When my parents told me they didn’t believe I should be able to get married, I said I didn’t know if I could come home anymore.  Dad’s voice rose like his father’s, “I will not compromise my principles!” Mom said, “Now wait a minute you two.” Tears streaming down my face, I said, “Dad, if I truly loved someone and wanted to marry him and you weren’t at the wedding I don’t know what I’d do.” He suddenly saw me.  He put his arms around me, wiped away my tears and said,  “You’re my son. I’ll be there.”

He is here.

A final memory in Pt 3 next...
