The Duke of Rothesay has received a postcard from the Scottish island of St Kilda via a tiny mailboat, which has travelled a thousand miles over ten years! ✉️⛵️

“I have never forgotten my visit to this amazing archipelago in 1971 and I so look forward to returning one day, not only to remind myself of its rugged beauty, but also its extraordinary history and breathtaking bird life. As Patron of the National Trust for Scotland, I am immensely grateful to all those who work to preserve our heritage though caring for special places like St Kilda.” - HRH The Duke of Rothesay writes in response to the postcard from Susan Baines. 📮

Today is the 90th anniversary of the evacuation of St Kilda, which ended almost 4,000 years of human occupation on the archipelago. Up until the 1930s, residents are thought to have survived the harsh environment by catching seabirds for food, feathers and oil, farming crops and raising livestock.

In 2010, to mark 80 years since the island’s evacuation, a ‘mailboat’ was made, filled with postcards and launched into the Atlantic. The old St Kilda tradition was previously used by residents in the hope that mail would land on more populated places to be sent on. This summer, the recreated mailboat was found by a group of children and their grandfather on a beach in Andøya, situated approximately 180 miles inside the Arctic Circle and over a thousand miles from St Kilda.

⬅️ Amongst the enclosed mail was a postcard addressed to The Prince of Wales. Swipe to take a closer look.

Today, St Kilda is the UK’s only dual @UNESCO world heritage site, and one of only 39 in the world. It is also now home to the UK’s largest colony of Atlantic puffins.

The Duke of Rothesay is Patron of the @nationaltrustforscotland and visited St Kilda in 1971 with The Queen.
