To celebrate #NationalAllotmentsWeek, Melissa, Head of Gardens @dumfrieshouse, is back with some more expert advice on how to care for the soil of your own allotment or garden during warmer, drier summer months 🥕 🥬 🍅

Watch to the end for a glimpse of the roses in the estate’s Queen Elizabeth Walled Garden in all their glory! 🌹

National Allotments Week was launched by @national_allotment_society in 2002 as a way of raising awareness of allotments and the role they play in helping people to live healthier lifestyles, grow their own food, develop friendships and bolster communities.

The Prince of Wales has been Patron of the society since 2011 and is himself a keen gardener.

This year’s theme is #growingforhealthandwellbeing - which, like Dumfries House’s education programme for schools, reflects the many benefits of growing, cooking and eating your own fruit and vegetables.

A video competition was held for people of all ages, inviting them to show off their allotments to the world. Watch all the submissions on the National Allotments Week YouTube channel at the link in our bio, including 11 year old Tom, who won the children’s category with his happy furry hens! 🐓
