Hip-hop has always been my window into the future & the ultimate springboard for activism, so in the summer of 1995 I gathered some important voices to discuss the state of hip-hop & its role in the broader context of our everyday lives….From politics to technology, you name it. The Vibe Summit took place at New York’s Peninsula Hotel, & some of the panel members included Clarence Avant; Malcolm X’s eldest daughter, Attalah Shabazz; Essence’s Ed Lewis; Allen Shaw from MIT; Alan Kay, the guru from Silicon Valley; & Fab 5 Freddy as moderator. Every hip-hop cat you know of was in the audience that day, & speaker after speaker talked about power as a form of responsibility…About talent as a power that shouldn’t be used to destroy, even if anger is the initial motivator for your actions. To me, the bebop to hip-hop connection is about feeding yourself with knowledge—being hip is about being aware…& man, I still feel like this is as relevant today in 2020 as it was in ’95. So, as we head into voting season, I’ll say it again…We can no longer afford to be nonpolitical. Your voice matters…Educate it. Then use it.
