Having grown up in the South Side of Chicago, with nothing but gang life to strive for, all I wanted to be was a baby gangster. So, after my dad moved us to Bremerton, I was still runnin’ around like one, & broke into a local rec center after hearing they had lemon meringue pie/ice cream. My bros, friends, & I ate it all up, had a food fight, then split up to explore...I opened the door to an office & was about to close it when I only saw a little spinet piano in the corner…but something inside of me said, “Idiot, go back into that room!” I walked over & when I touched the piano, it was as if every cell in my body yelled, “This is what you’re going to do the rest of your life!!”

Music 100% SAVED my life, because I would’ve been dead a long time ago knowing the environment I grew up in, & my path to getting out/survival started with that piano…so it brings me an unbelievable amount of joy whenever I’m able to share that same gift with others.

Towards the beginning of the pandemic, my team at @playgroundsessions + @hal_leonard & I wanted to share this sentiment by offering a free online course for anyone to learn “You Raise Me Up” on piano & then allow everyone to perform it together via a Virtual Piano Recital, since we couldn’t physically meet. It’s without a doubt that so much more has changed in our world even since we started the class, but the goal remains the same: Unify. Music has always been my way of breaking down barriers, & as I sit here watching this Global Piano Recital, it’s apparent that it ain't about to stop now!! Big-time props to everyone around the world who participated, & I hope that it brought you a glimpse of joy during some undoubtedly difficult times.
