Photo by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz In an otherworldly stretch of desert in Namibia, dead and living trees in the Namib-Naukluft National Park delineate where massive, slowly moving dunes have caused an ancient lake bed to shift and the water table to drop. Some of the dead trees are 600 to 700 years old, with the dry, sunny conditions inhibiting rot. The Afrikaans name for the area is Dead Vlei—dead marsh.
