“As New Yorkers, we find ourselves missing what we once loathed,” our columnist Dan Barry writes. “Those car-horn bleats of annoyance. Those corner clusters of impatience, waiting for a green light. Those barks of ‘Excuse me!’ that sound like the opposite of an apology.”

“We ache for what was,” he continued.

We once measured our days to New York City’s rhythms, keeping time to its idiosyncratic beat. But when the coronavirus pandemic reached the city in March, the things that made New York feel like New York largely disappeared.

The Times dispatched @heislerphoto to photograph the feel of the hushed city, and @danbarry1958 to describe the New York City of our imagination. Tap the link in our bio to listen to the sounds of a pre-pandemic New York: a parade in the streets, the roar of fans at a ballgame, the bustle of the subway. And take in the scenes as they exist today, echoes of city life that are unsettling and yet also reassuring, reminding us of the New York we hope will return.
