A regal bird, the Hawaiian Goose, also known as the nēnē, is the state bird of Hawaii and only found on those Pacific islands. Hunted to the brink of extinction by the early 1950s, only 30 birds remained. After decades of conservation efforts, including an intensive captive breeding program and rigorous habitat restoration, the nēnē was reclassified from endangered to threatened in 2019 under the federal Endangered Species Act.
