Recently, four critically endangered Plains-wanderer birds headed to the Taronga Wildlife Hospital from their quarantine aviaries for a health check.
The birds are part of a vital conservation breeding program that aims to save this species from the brink of extinction by establishing a sustainable group that can support reintroductions to supplement wild populations.
There are thought to be just 300 birds remaining in the wild - a record low for the species - so health checks such as these are extremely important in ensuring the health and wellbeing for these valuable birds.
Taronga’s Plains-wanderer conservation breeding program is part of the National Recovery Plan, which see Taronga Zoo Sydney and @tarongawesternplainszoo work in partnership with the @nswenviromedia Saving Our Species program, and other zoos including @zoosvictoria, @zoossa and @featherdalewildlifepark to establish and maintain a healthy genetic population as an insurance against extinction in the wild.
