Researches from both Taronga Conservation Society and UNSW have been working with farmers in the Okavango Delta region in Botswana, painting eyes on the backsides of cattle in 14 herds which had suffered lion attacks. Researchers painted one-third of each herd with eyes on rumps, one third with cross marks and one-third remained unmarked. Through this four-year study, it was discovered that cows which had eyes painted on their rump remained unharmed.  This method, known as 'eye-cow' has now been produced in both English Setswana to assist farmers in adopting this technique. It is hoped that this simple, low-cost, non-lethal approach will allow farmers to coexist with lions and other predators.   This is an incredible achievement for lions in the wild as populations continue to decline with human-animal conflict a significant contributor!   So it looks like the ‘eyes’ have it this World Lion Day!
