Two weeks after a Japanese ship ran aground off Mauritius and later began leaking oil into its protected waters and onto its shoreline, officials fear the MV Wakashio may split into two "at any time," creating a more urgent disaster for the island nation in the Indian Ocean. Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, who declared a "state of environmental emergency" on Aug. 7, requested assistance from France, which sent experts and equipment from the nearby island of Reunion. "We are expecting the worst," Jean Hugues Gardenne, Mauritian Wildlife Foundation manager, told the Associated Press. "The ship is showing really big, big cracks ... So much oil remains in the ship, so the disaster could become much worse. It's important to remove as much oil as possible. Helicopters are taking out the fuel little by little, ton by ton."
