Demonstrators angry at the Lebanese government clashed with security forces in central Beirut on Aug. 8, four days after a giant explosion at the city's port sent a deadly and destructive shockwave throughout the capital, turning whole neighborhoods inside out and reigniting protests that began last fall against the country's political elite. Some protesters on Saturday threw stones at officers or jumped over barricades that had closed off access to parliament while others entered government ministries, the Associated Press reports; police responded with volleys of tear gas and rubber bullets. In the evening, Prime Minister Hassan Diab called for early elections. Protesters say negligence and corruption across Lebanon's political system contributed to Tuesday's disaster, which left more than 150 people dead and thousands injured.
