Two police officers got out of their car and started walking toward the store next door. I made eye contact with one of the police officers and asked him if we should leave. (We had walked to the ice cream store so we had the wagon with us.) He said we were fine. THEN both officers pulled out their guns, aiming them at the store yelling, “LAPD put your hands up.” I basically threw Lennox in the wagon and took off running. I don’t think I’ve ever ran so fast in my life. I ran because I had my 4 year old son with me. I ran because I didn’t know what was happening. I ran because I didn’t know what else to do. All I could think about was a shoot out taking place behind us and getting caught in the cross fire. Lennox was asking me what was happening and why I was running so fast. Why I was crying.... I had taken Lennox to get ice cream. We were laughing and goofing off. He was slurping away because he never leaves a drop of behind...I wasn’t sure what to tell him. Again, I’m at a loss and not sure how to explain the current circumstances of the world to my four-year-old son. How honest is too honest? How “honest” are you with your children? I don’t want to scare him but I’m also not going to lie to him. He could clearly see how startled I was and I wasn’t sure how to explain that.
