Sometimes you see a house and an entire story enters your mind. Phil lives here. He parks his car backward because he’s thought through life’s big questions. He leaves the drive clear for Marla, his second wife, who will succumb to the coronavirus in early October. It’s gonna be weird for him. He and his friends—including Marla—had called it a fake crisis. Passing around jokes about car accident victims who “died of Covid-19.” What a joke. Yes even Marla had lung cancer—smoker since she was 18. Maybe a little overweight but who isn’t? But man she went quick. Got sick and died at 64. Phil isn’t sure what to feel. He misses her. Misses their chit chat. A new winter is coming for him. All he knows now is what he doesn’t know.
