Today marks 186 years since the ‘official’ end of Slavery in Guyana, where my mother is from. A day of huge celebration and dreams of new beginnings. However, the slaves found out the following day that a clause in the Emancipation Act that meant that any slave over 6 years old had to serve an obligatory ‘apprenticeship’, continuing their free labour for another 6 years. Each plantation owner was given between £52 and £230 per slave in compensation, while the slaves didn’t receive a penny. When the 6 years finally came to an end, decades of indentured labour and the continued struggle for independence and survival followed.

Today I choose to throw my head back and smile as the sun hits my face, knowing that my ancestors are with me, that a win for me is a win for each of them, and that their strength, determination, joy and rebellion flows through my veins. I am who I am because of you. And I will continue to do all I can to make you proud. x
