The toxic truth. Around 1 in 3 children globally – up to 800 million – are poisoned by lead. Nearly half live in South Asia.
⠀
Children are being exposed through the dangerous unregulated recycling of lead acid batteries - but also through contaminated water and leaded pipes, toys, cosmetics, paint, pottery and spices.⠀
⠀
In addition to lowering IQ levels, lead exposure is linked to mental health, behavioural issues and could lead to kidney and cardiovascular issues later on in life.⠀
⠀
To protect children’s health, UNICEF and @pureearthnow are calling for urgent action including stronger environmental, health and safety legislation, and investment in health services to monitor, test and treat children’s exposure to lead.
