We don’t yet have enough evidence to measure the impact on disease transmission rates. But the risks to children’s learning, safety and wellbeing are well documented. The longer children are out of school, the greater the risk of sexual violence, child labour and child marriage. We know from past experience, including during the Ebola crisis, that the longer children remain out of school, the less likely they are to ever return. Children in fragile families who live with abuse, neglect or dysfunctional parenting have the double trauma of being cut off from supportive relationships with teachers or friends at school. As schools make plans to reopen after COVID-19 shutdowns, it can’t be business as usual. We’re working with governments and partners to invest in better schools - and reach the most vulnerable children.
