This year we are contributing R67,000 to the Namibian Lion Trust and buy a collar to protect a pride of wild lions in Namibia from human-wildlife conflict. A collar provides an “early warning system” for rural farmers, so that when a wild lion pride is nearing their livestock, that can take necessary precautions to protect their livestock, and prevent any conflict or danger for the lion. It takes around 67 minutes to collar a lion. It is no easy feat. From identifying to darting them, the team must move quickly to monitor vitals, take measurements and do health checks, and make sure the collar is comfortably fitted. It can be stressful, but these 67 minutes can mean another 67 hours, 67 weeks, or 67 months that this lion and its pride will stay alive and safe!
