The “runway” format debuted at the end of the 19th century, but this week Paris debuted a new fashion phase: Digital fashion week. @YouTube provided the stage for the Fédération De La Haute Couture et de la Mode’s (@fhcm) couture shows and men's fashion week, exclusively on YouTube.com/Fashion. Yes, the fashion world misses being together in person. (No one misses it more than me!) And this is unchartered territory: Fashion spent more than a century doing one thing, and in four months it was tasked to do another. So, M-E-R-C-I to the designers, production teams, editors, glam teams, and various other members of the style community who pivoted in the wake of current events to convert runway shows into virtual presentations. To be clear: The industry is in throes of much needed cultural shifts and innovations, and we're here for that. I'm posting some screen recordings of a few shows that inspired me. They include the collaboration between @mrkimjones and @amoakoboafo that resulted in the colorful @dior collection (1); the runway-as-real life catwalks from @bluemarbleparis (2) and @we11done (3); a river as runway for @reesecooper (4); and the legit BTS vibes from the @hermes show (5). @olivierrousteing put on a captain's hat for a @balmain flashmob on a boat in the Seine (6), @thombrowne introduced me to the body of work (pun!) of @moses (7), and @viktorandrolf (8) summed up a fashion fantasy of 2020: A ball gown with spikes. Lastly, on a personal nostalgic note, I was particularly inspired by @virgilabloh's @louisvuitton animated video (9) and @kidsuper’s stop-motion runway (10) because they reminded me of MTV's "Celebrity DeathMatch" and Paula Abdul's friend MC Skat Kat, respectively.
