Why is it that when talking about the female triad (eating disorders, menstrual disturbances, and bone loss) that the sports gymnastics and figure skating always come up. WE CAN CHANGE THIS. Not only did I constantly hear about and struggle with my appearance as a skater, but since retiring, I see and hear from so many others about the hardships they have faced. Coaches and judges who do not have education in the body and nutrition telling their students how they should fuel themselves and what to do for weight loss. THIS IS NOT RIGHT. Coaches and judges need to understand that their words have real world impacts that last long after athletes leave the sport. Girls should not be afraid to eat carbohydrates or protein. Carbohydrates are NEEDED for energy production. Protein is NEEDED for muscle recovery and synthesis. Athletes NEED to fuel their body with real foods from animal sources to get the necessary micronutrients for HEALTH. A diet should be constructed for optimal performance and if weight loss is needed, then athletes should work with a nutritionist to find healthy ways in doing so.  Girls should also not be afraid to do resistance training and have muscle because it “makes them look bulky”. There is a reason why strength and conditioning is an ESSENTIAL part of every sports training regime. Strength training is about power, muscle endurance, strength. These are all things that will always help you in your sport, no matter what it is. Strong is beautiful because strong is healthy. Strong can be the one thing standing between second and first place. We need to do better as a sport. We need to educate ourselves and educate those that are in control of us.
