Towards the end of my skating career I started to struggle with the stress of the sport. I felt truly tired ALL the time. My family could not understand when I said I did not want to move all day, I was mentally and physically drained and exhausted. I started experiencing such bad stress that before stepping on the ice during my competitions I would feel the uncontrollable urge to break down in tears. My body and mind could not handle the sport any longer but I tried to keep pushing on. Many of the physical concerns that show an athlete is burnt out are injuries, overtraining, feeling tired all the time, a lack of physical development, erratic performances, losing, and being beat by individuals the athletes used to beat. Burnout can then lead to staleness which is defined as a 5% or greater reduction in performance for 2 weeks or longer. 80% of stale athletes are clinically depressed (Weinberg et al., 2015). Relating to my previous post, REST IS KEY. There will be NO IMPROVEMENT without taking the time to gather oneself either physically or mentally and be able to really relax. Athletes are always on the go and can often forget about taking a step back in order to take an even bigger step forward in the long run. If you’re reading this, take a break, do something just for you and let yourself enjoy the moment 🖤 #kinesiology #sportpsychology #burnout #stale #athletes #teamusa」4月30日 10時37分 - elliana_pogrebinsky
