It begins with the Kippu-iri ritual (a Shinto ritual) on July 1st, includes mikoshi purification on July 10th, then, following “Hoko Tate” (float construction), offers “Yoiyama” (festival eve) on July 16th, and “Yama Hoko Junko” (float procession) on July 17th - amounting to a brilliant festival play out to the sound of Gion festival music as one of Kyoto’s famous summer traditions. This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Gion Festival was limited to only a portion of the Shinto rituals, and events such as the Yama Hoko procession were cancelled. This was the first time in 58 years that the Yama Hoko Junko was cancelled, and the first time in 74 years that the mikoshi parade was cancelled. In light of this, Gekkeikan is planning a special feature of the Gion Festival on our Instagram account.
