Give grandma a hug from me. “My amazing grandfather, John Vecchioni, peacefully passed away this morning. His 94 incredible years were full of service to his country, family and community, hard work and deep love and affection for my grandmother, my mom and my aunts and uncles, his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and all of our loved ones too. He used to tell me he didn’t expect to live beyond 70, so every single year was a great blessing, even this one. I am grateful he got so many. He spent parts of his life in Michigan, in a small town outside Rome and on the USS Winooski in the Pacific, but his very favorite place was sitting at the kitchen table surrounded by all of us. There he taught me how to make pasta and roll gnocchi by hand, craft the perfect sandwich and argue with a spouse with conviction, laughter and love. It is a particularly hard time to lose the foundation of our big family while we are all apart from each other. In honor of Grandpa, my cousins and brothers have been sending pictures of sandwiches to each other all day. I think he would have been delighted that we found a way to laugh over stacks of mortadella, sausage and provolone once again. We will miss you always Grandpa.
