In school as a kid I learned that chattel slavery ended when Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. That might be what a lot of you learned as well. What I found out later is that the proclamation didn’t immediately free all enslaved people. The Emancipation Proclamation had minimal impact on the Confederacy, particularly Texas, because there weren’t enough Union troops to enforce it. It wasn’t until two and a half years later on June 19th 1865, when union General Gordon Granger announced the federal orders in Galveston, Texas that those who were enslaved learned of their freedom. But as we have learned, the ending of non-penal slavery with the ratification of the 13th amendment didn’t really bring black people their freedom. It just shifted the laws around in regards to how we oppress and control black people. As white people, I’d encourage us to use this day for self-education and reflection on Juneteenth, its white erasure in our history books, and what we must do to continue to dismantle white supremacy. On a personal note, today I’m supporting my girlfriend @elliesatter in her celebration of her ancestors’ freedom. She would ask everyone who is able today to support black owned business. She also encourages everyone to check out the Okra Project @theokraproject. #juneteenth
