I apologized to Kristi but Kristi wasn’t having it, leans over, and says to me “My mom said she’s embarrassed of me for letting a Nigger best me at violin.” • I never told my parents what Kristi said but I worked hard and practiced consistently to remain first chair. • I had no permanence to Violin but I mastered it, subconsciously so Kristi’s mama could stay mad. • The truth is, many Black Americans are expected to fail and viewed as inferior in the arts as well as our overall lifestyle.
