As the third oldest active open-pit copper mine in the world, the Santa Rita mine (or Chino Mine) in New Mexico, produced six million pounds of copper annually two centuries ago. Its conversion to an open pit forced the town of Santa Rita to move as the mine grew in the early 1900s, and today Santa Rita is a ghost town.
