The itinerant lifestyle adopted by Zheng and her friends was far from typical elsewhere in the country. “I have always been interested in alternative ways of living since I was a young," says Zheng. "As a child, I was inspired by the vagabond writer San Mao and the ancient Chinese poets who would travel the world and write, they are the same poets who inspired Jack Kerouac.” While Zheng grew up in the landlocked central province of Henan, it helped that from the age of three she began traveling across China with her activist mother, further opening her eyes to the country’s rich diversity.
