‘I was born here in New York, and I’m kind of stuck here emotionally. There are lots of easier places to make art. But I think New York is great because of the amount of art you can see and the amount of artists that are around,’ says artist @glennligon.⁠

In his multidisciplinary practice, Ligon engages with text and found imagery to highlight African-American experiences, rendering a portrait of America as a concept, a place and a nation. He was one of 14 New York-based artists to sit for a portrait by Brigitte Lacombe for our May 2020 issue, to celebrate Hauser & Wirth’s (@hauserwirth) upcoming space in Manhattan, on 542 West 22nd Street.⁠
