Photo by @daisygilardini A polar bear in Wapusk National Park cleans its fur. Polar bears need to stay dry and clean because wet, matted fur is a poor insulator.
Wildlife biologist Ian Stirling has noted that in summer, after feeding, polar bears often head out to open water and spend up to 15 minutes washing, licking their paws, chests, and muzzles. They dry themselves by shaking off excess water and rubbing their fur in the snow. In winter, polar bears clean themselves with snow and, when available, water. They rub their heads in the snow, push forward on their stomachs, and roll over on their backs.
