I am always proud to represent my country on the world stage, but not proud of what my country was built on - Indigenous genocide, Black enslavement and Chinese labour and mistreatment. Did you know that July 1st was referred to as Humiliation Day by Chinese-Canadians? It is also the anniversary of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1923 which banned all Chinese immigration to Canada until 1947. My dad’s family emigrated in the late 1800s and were required to pay a “head tax”, a fee charged to all Chinese people entering Canada. Today I am remembering all the wrongs that were done in the name of building this nation. I am also celebrating this land that has been stolen from Indigenous people that have cared for it since time immemorial. This land that is now caring for me. I live on the unceded ancestral territory of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, and recreate often on the land of the St’at’imc and Lil’wat Nations (photo).」7月2日 13時57分
