First, we need to acknowledge that women and girls—particularly from historically marginalized communities like Black women, Indigenous women, LGBTQI people, people with disabilities—are disproportionately impacted by this crisis, and implement policies that prioritize their health and rights. There are a number of steps that governments can, and should, take. For starters, governments need to make sure people can access sexual and reproductive health care when and how they need it. They could do this by cutting out barriers and creating more opportunities for women to engage in self-care. Like, for example, making birth control available over the counter instead of through prescription, which we know is safe and effective. It is also critical that we ensure high quality maternal health care throughout this crisis and after it. In so many places, even in the US, women are having trouble even reaching facilities where they can give birth, and once they're there, they face compromised care. If this keeps up, we will see increases in maternal mortality, particularly among the most marginalized women and girls. In the US, for example, maternal deaths among black women are 2-3 times the rate among white women; the interplay with COVID-19 could be particularly devastating. Making each of these priorities happen around the world requires the unity and power of a coordinated global response.
