This is such an important moment for all of us to really see and think about how the different levels of social protection, democracy and human rights around the world impact women, and try to come out of this pandemic with better systems. A huge part of that is coming together to create a coordinated, global response to COVID-19. In times of crisis like this, you see how systemic gender and racial discrimination and the lower value of girls in some countries plays out - it could have really profound consequences for a whole generation of adolescent girls. We are already seeing higher rates of violence against women and girls and disruptions in their access to services, like health and education. For many, this will have lifelong consequences. For example, many of the girls taken out of school will not return and because of this will face higher risks of pregnancy, child marriage and poverty. While the stakes are incredibly high, it has been heartening that so far, the global response has focused, in large part, on gender equality and issues like sexual and reproductive health and rights. This will help us continue to break down some of the typical barriers we face when we’re addressing women’s issues internationally. Governments are currently discussing what the global response to COVID-19 should be at the UN in New York and at the World Health Assembly. So far, the agreements they have reached have made it clear that women and girls and their sexual and reproductive health need to be part of the response to COVID.
