How do fireflies light up the night? And why do they light up at all? These are the questions that evolutionary ecologist Sara Lewis has studied for years. In her talk, she says that when fireflies — like the ones pictured here in the Smoky Mountains — light up, they aren't just talking; they're flirting! "The luminous displays we admire here and everywhere around the world are actually the silent love songs of male fireflies," says Lewis. "They're flying and flashing their hearts out. I still find it very romantic."
