Britain had called upon it’s Commonwealth territories to fill it’s severe lack of labour force after World War 2 to help rebuild a bomb damaged Britain. Many were ex-servicemen that actually fought for Britain in the war. The British Government promised citizenship, prosperity and employment for those who came... This saw an estimated half a million West Indians between 1948 and 1970, including my own grandfathers, travelling the 8000 miles from the Caribbean to begin a new life in the UK. The Windrush Generation, suffered unimaginable racism but they persevered and helped to rebuild a country that has barely recognised it’s contribution.  Cut to 2018 when this generation was rewarded for their essential contributions by them finding themselves on the wrong side of immigration laws thanks to Theresa May’s “hostile environment policies”. Some were detained, denied legal rights, threatened with deportation, and in 83 cases, actually deported due to May’s “deport first, ask questions later” attitude. Some still fight for justice 2 years on. This came to be known as #TheWindrushScandal.  I am a proud descendant of this Generation and I stand on your shoulders. Thank you for all that you did despite the racism you suffered.
