In honor of June Teenth-the day that all slaves in America were finally emancipated — 2 years after Lincoln Abolished Slavery in June-1865.
Batuque is a style of music created by women that originated in Cape Verde,(a group of islands off the west coast of Africa) some say the birth place of slave trade
The drums were condemned by the Church and taken away from the slaves because it was considered an act of rebellion.
The women continued their singing and dancing and the batuque lives on today.
I met the Batukadeira Orchestra while living in Lisbon.
These incredible women recorded a song with me called Batuka on my Madame ❌ album and then we toured the world together this past year. This song was one of the highlights of my show!! Enjoy and Celebrate! 🎉🎉🎉 🇨🇻 🇨🇻 🇨🇻
