エディー・バウアーさんのインスタグラム写真 - (エディー・バウアーInstagram)「Today is Juneteenth – the day we celebrate the end of slavery in the US.⠀ It commemorates June 19, 1865 when Union general Gordon Granger and his soldiers landed in Galveston, Texas with the news that the war was over and the enslaved were to be set free. ⠀ ⠀ In reality, Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation had become official two and half years earlier, but due to the limited number of Union soldiers in Texas, the executive order had not been enforced and slavery was still the norm. ⠀ ⠀ When Granger returned with his troops the forces were finally strong enough to overcome the resistance and 250,000 slaves were emancipated.⠀ ⠀ Juneteenth has been celebrated by Black communities ever since.
