It commemorates the end of enslavement on June 19th, 1865 when the last enslaved Black person was freed… 2.5 years after the emancipation proclamation… but some dickhead enslavers refused to pass that information on to the people they held captive so they could get more free harvest labor. Isn’t it sick the depths to which white supremacy in capitalism will go to protect profit… It’s not celebrated on the day of the Emancipation Proclamation because as @FreckledWhileBlack said, “the idea behind this is that our liberation is bounded by one another.” And it’s important to acknowledge that Black people were tricked into years of free work. There is a national push to make Juneteenth a national holiday, and a paid day off because Black people haven’t had a holiday that really celebrates their history of a revolution. Juneteenth is specific to the ending of slavery, which is super important because we’re now having more and more conversations about how slavery never really ended it evolved.
