thephotosocietyさんのインスタグラム写真 - (thephotosocietyInstagram)「Photo by @susiepostrust || The morning I took this picture, I woke up well before sunrise to make my way to the banks of Lago de Atitlan, a sparkling blue lake just north of Guatemala's capital, Guatemala City. I wanted to be there before the sun came over the ridge, golden and crisp. To my disappointment at the time, the overcast morning muted the sunrise, which could barely even be seen. I am struck now that it was hard for me to see the beauty that stood before me. I expected something different. I think of this morning now because in February, I had very different expectations for 2020. I didn't anticipate being mostly homebound because of coronavirus or digging deep within myself to understand anew the ways in which I have perpetuated racial injustice in our country. I am confident that there is beauty in this summer of protest and coronavirus. I am hopeful that we won't let this moment pass without making real changes in our country. It is time to challenge the systemic racism that is within our hearts and institutions.
