You may think that such a small part plays only a minor role, but the data collected by tyre temperature sensors is one of the most important sources of information for a Grand Prix team during a weekend! 🔑 Firstly, tyre temperature sensors are infrared sensors. They monitor and record data of the surface temperature of the tyre. As you can see in the image, there are three sensors here, one for each side and one for the centre of the tyre. Temperature can vary on different areas of the tyre depending on the track, so it's important to know if temperatures are getting too high on one side and causing excessive wear 🔥 The data collected can help engineers and riders to make decisions as to which tyre compound to use for the race. Keeping the optimum temperature in the tyre is key! Too hot and the tyre will wear too quickly, causing it to lose grip towards the end of the race. A tyre that can't keep enough temperature reduces its performance!
