And today they’re still told as a way to inspire hope in a world that seems to be on the verge of collapsing,” he explains. “This is because fairy tales represent the most profound expression of humanity’s struggle to create and maintain a process of civilisation. They trace a map of possible routes to achieve happiness, and they expose the moral conflicts deeply rooted in our species.” Zipes has spent his life studying fairy tales from all periods and geographical regions, and he has founded a children’s storytelling school that follows the principles of Gianni Rodari, who would have been 100 years old this year.
