Five years on, those words still resonate with the New Jersey native, who has gained global recognition as a literacy advocate and diversity activist, tirelessly carving out a space for black girls in the ethnically reductive world of children’s literature. At just 13-years-old, Dias launched #1000BlackGirlBooks - a campaign to collect 1,000 books that feature black girls as the lead character - and was catapulted into limelight. Within months she was invited to the White House. “My hope is that kids can see how advocating for justice can be cool” Dias says, before clarifying that her having befriended Oprah Winfrey, Yara Shahidi and Rowan Blanchard should not be their motivation, “It’s important that they don’t do this for rewards.
