Having been pretty sheltered in a conservative religious community, it was MTV that really exposed me to critical thinking and perspectives outside of my little sphere of influence. Yo! MTV Raps and 120 minutes were shows I went out of my way to tune into and had a critical impact on my youth. Groups like Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions and De La Soul CDs sat alongside Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails and the Cure. I didn’t think about it at the time but it was music that really opened my eyes to life experiences so foreign from my own. I was by no means “woke” back then, I had my biases that still stemmed from having no black people in school to shows like Cops that reinforced stereotypes of Black America. It’s been amazing to see so many artists/designers/musicians stand up for social change that can bring about real equality. You have influence whether you know it or not, let’s keep the conversation going. #blacklivesmatters」6月13日 5時16分 - jgspdx
