Something interesting happens each time I share the version of my bio I posted earlier. I always get quite a few responses - virtual Amens and Àsé and and “I know that’s right, Sis!” - all from Black women admittedly impressed (if not surprised) that I would include that first line - ⠀
⠀
“Dr. Yaba Blay is a dark-skinned, kinky-haired, first-generation American-born-Ghanaian who identifies as Black with a capital B.” ⠀
⠀
One woman wrote to me - “good for you for being brave enough to put that out there.” Listen to the language – “good for you” for being BRAVE ENOUGH to begin your bio by describing yourself as you are. AS I AM. 🤔⠀
⠀
Let that sit on you for a second. ⠀
⠀
Much of my work centers on Black body politics among/for Black women and girls, namely hair politics and skin color politics/colorism. To say that there are POLITICS AT PLAY when it comes to our bodies, is to say there are negotiations of power at play when it comes to our bodies. ⠀
⠀
How you see me as a dark-skinned, kinky-haired Black woman is absolutely informed by historically repetitive images and messages about Black people in general, Black women specifically; images and messages that have been informed by White supremacy. ⠀
⠀
How you SEE ME impacts how you TREAT ME.⠀
⠀
The other “brave” thing I do apparently is capitalize the B in “Black.” Listen, if you do not capitalize the b in Black when you are talking about racialized HUMAN BEINGS (kinda like a proper noun), you’re not talking to or about me. 😑😒 You’re talking about the color in crayon box. 🤷🏾♀️⠀
⠀
One of the first English writing lessons you get has to do with capitalization, right? And how do you “break down” how to know what to capitalize to a 6-year old? We essentially tell them to capitalize things that are important. ⠀
⠀
BLACK PEOPLE ARE IMPORTANT. Capital B. Thank you. 🙇🏾♀️ - @fiyawata ⠀
(footnote: unlike a lot of other folks, I capitalize BOTH “Black” and “White” when talking about racialized identities).⠀
