Can you define racism without going to Google?  I would guesstimate that most people cannot, even though we spend lots of time fighting about it in these Instagram comments. I want you to be well-informed and well-equipped before you jump back in those IG comments! 🙃⠀ ⠀ IF I had to give you an assignment, homework perhaps, I would ask you to DEFINE RACISM. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Not what you *think* it is. Not what you *feel* it is. I want you to LEARN WHAT IT IS.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ I, myself, am deliberate in using the term “White supremacy” rather than “racism.” Racism, in my humble opinion, is probably one of THE most misunderstood yet most OVERUSED terms. The problem is that we have made racism the problem of select individuals and not THE VERY FOUNDATION UPON WHICH THIS SOCIETY HAS BEEN BUILT. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ I know, those words come with a whole lot of weight. Say “White Supremacy” and see how quickly folks get uncomfortable - and not just White folks. The moment you say “White Supremacy” all folks think of are images of the KKK and other “hate groups.” But White supremacy doesn’t only come dressed in hoods - sometimes it wears a suit. Or a capris. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Whether you use “racism” or you use “White Supremacy,” what’s most important for you to understand is that they represent SYSTEMS and INSTITUTIONS. And they reflect centuries-long histories. CENTURIES. Which means they’re not going anywhere anytime soon.
