Today, Breonna Taylor would have celebrated her 27th birthday. But Breonna Taylor will only ever be 26. On March 13th, she was still just 26 years old when she was shot to death in her bed by the police, after a long day of serving her community as a first responder. You see, Breonna was an award-winning EMT, working on the frontlines of the COVID-19 crisis, which disproportionately kills black people, in Louisville, KY.

How could this happen? O‪n the night in question‬, the Louisville Metro Police executed a no-knock warrant — which is illegal — reportedly looking for drugs that they never found, trafficked by a person who did not live with Breonna or even in her apartment complex. And the to add insult to injury, the police already had this person in custody. Let me repeat that. The person they were looking for was ALREADY IN CUSTODY.

When they broke her door down, they sprayed her home with 20 rounds, shooting Breonna 8 times. They killed her while she slept in her bed.

No one has been arrested. Not one of the three offending officers has been charged. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. We will not forget Breonna, and we vow to fight for her.

Visit http://fightforbreonna.org/ and demand that special prosecutor Daniel Cameron comport with full transparency and accountability. Email him at attorney.general@ag.ky.gov #BreonnaTaylor #BreDay

You can read about Breonna’s joy, as shared with @Teen Vogue through her friends and family in a beautiful piece. Please do.

And I’d like to share from @jamilksmith’s beautiful Rolling Stone piece titled “Breonna Taylor Was Always Essential.” His words: “I wrote last month for @Rolling Stone about Taylor, and why, though I honor her service to her community, seeking accountability for her should have nothing to do with the job she held. ‘What value is celebrating an “essential worker” if, when the uniform comes off and she rests in her own bed, her blackness makes her disposable? If Taylor had identified herself as an EMT, would that have helped? Even if it did, is that the world we want? For black folks, “hero” is too often the bar that we must meet to avoid being murdered with wanton abandon.” #BlackLivesMatter
