It’s a step in the right direction of holding abuses of power accountable. The problem with police is, however many good cops there are- when you give a monopoly on violence to an organization, they will inevitably be used as an apparatus of the state, even though they are funded by tax money to serve “us”. It’s the classic mafia paradox- you have to pay the mafia to protect you from the mafia. If we’ve learned anything from the Stanford prison experiment and Milgram experiment in 60’s, it’s that even normal people can behave like monsters when “following orders” and power hierarchies corrupt. There is no easy answer as we obviously need some way of enforcing justice, but for all of history we’ve grappled with the nepotistic quandary of how the people who make the rules- get to break the rules.
