There’s been a video going around about a “good cop” Sheriff high-fiving protestors and saying he wants to make the “protest into a parade.” He pointed out one cop and said “he hugs people.” (Many more videos like this have since been shared) I will not be sharing or celebrating it. This fits into the notion that we just need “friendlier cops.” We need real ACCOUNTABILITY, not hugs. Don’t forget, this man is an ELECTED official, who is thinking votes. This is a strategy to pacify and control protestors. When they recognize that brutalizing protestors is resulting in more public outcry and mobilization, some of the tactics are switched to control and pacify. A form of “soft control” paired with militarization of the police is a counterinsurgency strategy...an incredibly effective tactic that the military adopted FROM POLICING to use in occupied countries. If you are occupying counties or communities, you can’t just rely on brute force. You have to “build trust” in order to more effectively control a community and its people. (read “Fire the Cops” by Kristian Williams for more on all of this). It is sure as shit not about the liberation of Black and oppressed people. This reminds me of the police chief who bailed out MLK because he realized that the longer MLK sat in jail, the more people were driven to action because of the *visible* injustice. It was not about “showing support,” or changing the actual conditions that MLK was protesting. And I would like you to consider this. Even if cops NEVER murdered anyone else (which we know they will) the institution would still be INCREDIBLY violent and oppressive. Locking up 25% of the population of incarcerated people worldwide despite the US only having 5% of the worlds population, enforcing poverty...this is all violence. I work for solutions that take power from the police and put it into communities, and not the opposite. So I’m not interested in a narrative of “see, you can trust SOME cops!” that continues to invest faith in an institution created as slave patrols.
