Morning! Once a week I donate my social media to a different student from our @yearsofliving @putapriceonit campaign to share stories about how climate change has impacted their life, along with what we can do to be a part of the solution. This week’s post comes from Angela Ruan, a student in MA. “Chinatown is my home. New immigrants carrying groceries home from the supermarket, children playing in the streets and running through the entrance gate at the neighborhood, the alluring smell of food drifting up the alleys are all elements of my heart. Summer nights spent talking with my best friend under brightly lit with colored lanterns, bring me a sense of profound serenity I can only feel in the community that shaped me.  So it was difficult to hear, one of those summer nights, that my friend was experiencing breathing difficulties from the polluted exhaust wafting from I-93, the enormous highway that borders our neighborhood. In that moment, I became determined to protect my home from pollution and the climate on which we all depend. At first, I was unsure of how I could make a difference on an issue that not only affects Boston, Massachusetts, but everywhere else in the world. I asked myself: How can one tackle a global issue? Yet, I have since learned that global issues have local solutions. As leader of my Environmental Club and Fellow with @ourclimateleaders, I’ve come to understand that we can win on local policy, like carbon pricing, which will inspire the global action we need to deal with the existential threat to the place I call home.”
