UPDATE: Today is quarantine day 33 here in New Zealand. ⁣
I also recently celebrated my 33rd Birthday. While I’d normally celebrate by surfing, skating or hiking in the backcountry, this year I spent the day working in the garden behind the kiwi cottage that we are renting. This is how I've spent most days during lockdown. Unlike other parts of the world, NZ has taken the isolation measures extremely seriously. The only stores open are the pharmacy and supermarkets - nothing else. No take-out food. No hardware stores. No hiking or water activities either. You’re not even permitted to get in your car if it isn’t to access essential goods.⁣

To coincide with the physical isolation my phone decided to stop turning on a while back. While I tend to keep my phone at a distance as it is, this has forced me to fully exist in the present moment, here, and now. (To any friends or family trying to get a hold of me via call or text, please know there is a good chance I haven’t received it). ⁣
⁣
I like this photo because it is a real moment — I want to remember these times. This isn’t a breathtaking vista, a perfect wave, or some unique landscape feature. This is real life, in a time I’m sure we will all remember for the rest of our lives.⁣
Tomorrow the country will begin to reopen and we will start to discover what the new norm of life is like here.⁣
